Carl is the Awesome #4
I just posted this, Carl is the Awesome #4. The fourth of the original minis! Check it out. So the end of the year is coming up and their will be lists galore about the best comics of 2006. I quite possibly have just read the best one "The Squirrel Mother and other Stories" by Megan Kelso. I'd read Queen of the Black Black some years back and enjoyed it but this! MAN! She has skyrocketed to the top, seriously. In general, I tend to lean towards longer narratives. Stuff like From Hell, Nausicaa, and Love and Rockets, stand as my favorite comics ever. Short stories normally don't do that much for me. It isn't a problem with the format really. It's just that it's REALLY difficult to do. That's what frustrates me about even the best anthologies. You tend to only get the half-goods. But a one-woman anthology by someone of Kelso's caliber is something different. I wasn't disappointed with any of this. It was beautiful, charming, whimsical, magical, (plenty of other adjectives) but most of all it was FULFILLING. Now, the book is a quick read and if you're a person who equates cash with time spent more so then quality, you might be disappointed. The book is 16.95 and goes quickly (of course i'm a cheap skate who bought it half-price at the strand). But these stories deserve rereading. So buy it, borrow it, read a couple of the stories in the store. Kelso is sensei!

I love the redesign, but the links in your post are the same color as the text! Help a brotha out! Otherwise, really pretty, Neil.
As for Squirrel Mother. It is the Awesome. Definitely one of the best books to come out. And that title story? I've thought about it some more, and think it might actually be one of the best short stories ever. In any medium.
I wonder what I thought of it before...
