Project Restoration
Disclaimer: This is completely un-carl related. But I'm experimenting with the idea of just blogging here more than I do. I'll keep the rants over there for now, but this is comics stuff so..
whatever. I make the rules here!-
So. I've begun the process of revamping the first 51 pages of Tear-Stained Makeup. Why you say? Because you can never have enough work to do. Mostly the reason is I dropped the greyscale after issue 2. They printed far worse then they look below. So this is to make the art more consistent. I've gotta a couple of layers I did in pattern maker, a stipple one (Dee's dress) and a cross hatch one (dudes pants behind her), and I'm freehanding hatches (building behind Dee's head to the right). The below page is still in the works. I'm liking it so far. It looks like some dirty ass manga. I also got rid of the chapter titles and have added a border because no pages will go to bleed when I reprint this stuff.
I must say though, It's days like this I love the fact that my office is sooo slow and they give me this fast-ass mac and a wacom and basically pay me to work on my own shit. Thank you modern, urban, American graphics jobs. You rule.

Although TSM looks better without the computerry grays, I don't think going back and doing too much revamping on old issues is a good idea for collections, in general. I mean, if it isn't going to take TOO long then go for it (like I am redoing the lettering with a computer font of my handwriting for issue 1 of MBH when the collection goes to print, but that's it, and that's only because it is really almost unreadable). I think it's good to have your crappy older comics side by side with your newer better stuff so people can see how much you've improved. It makes the new stuff look that much better. But if it's not going to take months and months then go for it. If it keeps you from potentially making a significant amount of new work, then don't. THE LIZ HAS SPOKEN.
oh i agree liz. i prefer to see people get better then no change at all. unless you're freaking amazing you got room to get better. the revamp is mostly for a modicum of consistency. In general there are certain things i depended on the grey for's for. spatial relationships and what not. it shouldn't take too long (and im doing it at the office!)
